According to their latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2021\/01\/data-privacy-day-at-apple-improving-transparency-and-empowering-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">update<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Apple will begin enforcing ATT in the early spring of this year (2021) with <\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-ios-14-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">iOS 14.5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This means that without user opt-in, the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) will be unavailable, and how advertising measurement (ie, attribution) and targeting is performed will change. The question arises, are there any IDFA alternatives out there?\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h3 style=\"padding-top: 20px\">What is an IDFA and why it\u2019s important<\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-idfa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IDFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> serves as a globally unique identifier assigned to an iOS device. Digital advertising uses an IDFA for addressability, ad targeting, and <a href=\"\/glossary-deterministic-attribution\">deterministic attribution<\/a> for campaign conversions.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The IDFA is important because it makes it possible to identify the same device and user across different apps with 100% accuracy. This helps advertisers understand their users and target specific <\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-audience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">audiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with content they find useful, interesting, or beneficial. By gaining a holistic understanding of their users, advertisers can increase their return on ad spend (<\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-roas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ROAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and drive growth more efficiently.<\/span>\r\n<h3 style=\"padding-top: 20px\">The future of attribution and targeting<\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While there are no true IDFA alternatives, there are different ways to perform <a href=\"\/glossary-attribution\">attribution<\/a> and <a href=\"\/glossary-targeting\">targeting<\/a> after the enforcement of the ATT framework. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In either case, it all comes down to whether the user opts in or opts out of tracking through the ATT framework.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h4 style=\"padding-top: 10px\">Attribution eligibility post-ATT enforcement<\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The IDFA will continue to be available in instances where the end user opts in to <\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-tracking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tracking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through the ATT framework in your app. If the user has also opted in to tracking in the app where the ad was served, you will have access to the IDFA on both ends, thus enabling continued real-time, deterministic attribution by linking the two identical IDFA\u2019s across ad and conversion. From there, what attribution method(s) are available or aren\u2019t available varies based on ATT status of the user, paid vs. owned media, and in-app vs. mobile web channels. Before the IDFA goes away, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">learn as much as you can about the app affinities of your highest value users and pursue direct deal opportunities on cost per mille (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kochava.com\/glossary-cpm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CPM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) models directly with those publishers.<\/span>\r\n<h4 style=\"padding-top: 20px\">Explore OTT and CTV opportunities<\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over-the-top (<a href=\"\/glossary-ott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OTT<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and <\/span><a href=\"\/glossary-ctv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CTV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (connected TV) are quickly increasing in popularity. OTT\/CTV offers a valuable medium to reach mobile users with precise targeting by households and provides holistic visibility into the user journey. If a user opts out, SKAdNetwork will not provide attribution of mobile conversions to OTT\/CTV campaigns.
